How Much Exercise Does a Presa Need?

Every breed is different. Some dogs need a lot of exercise, while others are fine with less activity. If you’re raising a Presa, it’s important to understand the right amount of exercise your dog needs to stay healthy.

To establish the best fitness routine for your Presa Canario, use the following guide.

How to keep my large breed in shape

The fact is, Presa Canarios require a lot of exercise. You should plan to commit at least one hour every day to activities for your dog. The breed is large and muscular and has been bred to work, so they are happiest and healthiest when they are active. If you cannot provide this high level of activity for your Presa Canario, you should consider owning a different breed.

To provide the exercise your Presa Canario needs, plan to take him/her on two short walks or on one long walk each day. Their home environment should include a fenced yard where they can run and remain active. If you live in an apartment or other small residence, a Presa Canario is not the best choice of dog for you.

There are several activities you can incorporate into your dog’s day to keep your large breed in shape. Try the following exercise options to create the best fitness routine for your Presa Canario:

  • Walks and hikes: This is one of the simplest methods to provide exercise for your Presa Canario. For adults, aim for 60 minutes of walking or hiking per day. Presa Canario puppies can handle 10-minute walks; increase this time frame as they grow. While they are young, avoid taking Presa puppies on hikes that require a lot of jumping or running, since this can be damaging to their joints, which are not yet fully developed.
  • Swimming: Presa Canarios typically love to swim. This is a great way to help them get exercise and burn off energy. Try playing fetch in the water as a great swim-time activity. If your Presa isn’t a proven strong swimmer, be sure to put him/her in a swim vest.
  • Fetch: Toys and Frisbees are great items to have on hand to play fetch with your Presa Canario. They love this game, and it is perfect for helping your dog get the exercise he/she needs. Plus, you can play fetch even if you have mobility issues, since the dog is doing all the running.
  • Tug-of-war: Invest in a couple of sturdy ropes to play tug-of-war with your Presa Canario. This is another option if you are unable to go on long walks with your dog. It gives your Presa a chance to use his/her strength and flex those muscles that are always full of so much energy.
